Our Election-Year Promise to Future Voters

Throughout the 100-year history of Scholastic, 25 U.S. Presidential elections have occurred – and during each of them, we’ve stood by our credo, which states that we believe in the fair discussion of all sides of the issues of our times, with deep respect for facts and logical thinking.

Scholastic is steadfast in our commitment to keeping young people informed and engaged, and to providing objective and balanced coverage, with equal attention to the views of each party and candidate.?In this election year, our drive to ignite students’ passion for understanding civics and becoming engaged, active members of society is stronger than ever.

Scholastic provides age-appropriate, unbiased reporting of elections and politics in a variety of ways: through rigorous reporting in our classroom magazines, a host of compelling teacher and student materials, our Teacher, Parent, and Kids websites, and through our notable list of books, both fiction and nonfiction, that inform and inspire.

Instilling an understanding of the voting process, educating students on the issues, and positioning them to be stewards of good citizenship has long informed our work, which is grounded by our Mission and Credo – our guiding light. In it, we emphasize our core beliefs, including:

  • We believe in the democratic way of life, with basic liberties – and responsibilities – for everyone
  • We believe in representative government and even-handed justice that maintains equality of rights for all people
  • We believe in the basic freedoms of all individuals
  • We believe in the fair discussion of all sides of the issues of our times, with deep respect for facts and logical thinking, in the books, magazines, and educational materials we provide for schools and homes

We hope all educators, families, and students will use our election site – -- as a tool to support the critical discussions we’re all having during these times.

Scholastic remains, as ever, committed to providing the youngest members of our society with the tools and skills they need to navigate their own individual futures, as well as the collective future of the 21st century.
